Marcel Wanders

Marcel Wanders (Boxtel,1963) is a Dutch industrial designer. He is partly owner and art director of the design label Moooi in Breda. Additionally Wanders has his own design studio where he works for various international furniture brands. Wanders is also active as a jewelry designer.

Wanders took courses in Eindhoven, Arnhem, Maastricht and Hasselt and eventually graduated with honors from the Academy of Arts in Arnhem. In 1994 Wanders collaborated with Dinie Besems the Secret Covenant – Oysters & swine project. He broke through in 1996 with his Knotted Chair, a chair made of reinforced rope which he designed, in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft, for Droog Design. This design is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. He also won with the seat in 1997 the audience price of the Rotterdam Design Prize.

In 2005 he was editor of the Design Year Book. In 2005 he won a prize for the Carbon Chair, co-designed by Wanders, in Elle Decoration International Design Awards, in which he became Designer of the Year in 2006.

WANDSCHAPPEN developed in 1998 Wanders’ Crochet table and still produces this item. In 1996 WANDSCHAPPEN transformed the making of the Knotted Chair into a viable production. The Knotted Chair and the Fishnet Chair are made at the studio of WANDSCHAPPEN.
